PERSONALITY: Jesper is charismatic, sharp-witted, and a natural-born con artist. The con could be because he's good at reading people and charming enough to win them over. It could be because he likes to lie about where he comes from and who he is to suit what image he wants to portray. It could just be because it's fun and he likes seeing if he can fool others or fluster them. Either way, lies are something he is far more comfortable with than truth. He often piles so many lies on top of themselves that he forgets where the thread started.
He is friendly and skilled at chatting up people, especially if he wants something from them, but it also means he can talk himself into a corner and reveal secrets he didn't mean to. For example, he was desperate to get out of his debts so he let loose the information he was coming into money to his debtors, not realizing that would lead them to attack the Dregs before their mission even began. His mouth gets away from him. He is also a nervous talker and it's hard to shut him up once he gets started. He uses his mouth to snark and mock and always has to either have the last word or throw a joke into a tense situation.
Jesper wants to be confident and cocky and convince everyone he's tough and ruthless. He sees this sharpshooter identity of his, along with gambler and flirt, as one that he can hide behind and hope he can fake it until he makes it. Some of it is who he's become and not a lie, but a lot of it started that way and he doesn't know how to back out of it now ... or even if he wants to.
In truth, Jesper's a lot more unsettled underneath it. He lost his mother when he was seven which affected him strongly after she used her Grisha powers to save a girl but drew the poison into herself. His father then told him to push his powers down and hide them out of fear of losing him too, and that caused Jesper from a young age to be ashamed or stifle the power within him to not disappoint his father. The problem is that denying a Grisha gift can harm someone in a variety of ways, and in his case, it made him become reckless, risky, highly energetic, tempestuous, and a complete mess on the inside. It led to his compulsive gambling problem and him dropping out of school because he's incapable of focusing on much outside of a quick rush of adrenaline or a win. His father sent him to be schooled and he used that money to get into trouble instead, leading him to the Barrel and his found family the Dregs. He found criminal life a lot easier for his need for constant attention fulfillment.
Jesper is incredibly loyal to his friends. He knows he has flaws, he knows he lets them down sometimes with his bad decisions, and he wishes he could change but it's been a slow process. It was only recently that he addressed his gambling problem and his denial of his Grisha gift, and that it might be possible for him to change. When he got his payday, Jesper decided to put it in his father's name and limit himself, focusing instead of taking care of Wylan and considering practicing with his powers. Falling in love definitely has helped him make different priorities. He genuinely wants to be better, but it could be easy for him to backslide. He misses the ease and instant relief of being the permanent gambler. He misses getting into fights and promiscuity that came with needing any distraction possible. But he doesn't miss it as much as he likes the new path he's on, even if it's more difficult.
He wanted to be the person he puts forward, the arrogant sharpshooter who doesn't care about anything but the game or the mark, but he knows now that he isn't. Not entirely, at least. He's still learning that the more sincere version of himself, the one capable of love and honesty, is also valid and worth embracing. Finding peace with his father and admitting to everything he is has helped. Making peace with his friends and them succeeding in the biggest heist and con of all time helped. And his love for the sweet and awkward Wylan helped. Jesper is still young enough that he can change if he wants to stick with it, but also still young enough that he can continue making bad mistakes and have to learn from them.
But don't get him wrong. He is still going to flirt. He is still going to learn every inch of the city and possibly get involved with shady people who remind him of himself. He is going to laugh and snark and get into fights that he shouldn't be in. What's life without a little fun, right?
POWERS/ABILITIES: Jesper is a Fabrikator Grisha, that's in the Materialki order. Durasts (what he is) can manipulate glass, steel, wood, plants, stone, and anything relatively solid. They can change a solid's shape, texture, or composition. They are capable of absorbing injury from another person's body into their own and have telekinetic abilities to bring objects to them.
Jesper is not well trained in his abilities, having intentionally pushed them down. He is able to trot out his powers to manipulate metal in a mission, and he is a phenomenal sharpshooter because of them. He wasn't aware that his mother subconsciously trained him how to use the ability to manipulate bullets into hitting targets he probably should not be capable of doing. He can do things like bending bullets or hitting a target without having to look at it. He is coming around on trying to use his abilities more.
Outside of that Jesper is a gambler (who always loses) and a skilled con artist. He is an expert poker player and an expert combatant. He's had to survive on his own and then with his gang, and it requires skill and focus. He's definitely someone you want next to you in a brawl.
